Youth Group assists in sorting at St. Paul's distribution center

A Youth group from Green Valley Church of God in St. Albans participated in a service project at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Nell Fleming, Librarian, to organize all remaining donations from 2008/2009. In 2 hours the group from St. Albans, consisting of 15 youth and five adults built five book shelves and organized 95% of the books alphabetically and by genre on the shelves. Nell estimates the group did three months worth of work in 2 hours for Step by Step which will enable the new librarian who will start in January to get a head start in re-distribution with new wish lists received from teachers, youth and organizations which serve youth at poverty level. 15 boxes of large print and audio books re-distributed to Senior Centers

15 boxes of large print materials and audio books were re-distributed to senior centers around Kanawha County. Thanks to the donation by the Kanawha County Public Library after their annual book sale at the West Virginia Book Festival approximately 750 books were given to seniors around the county. Thank you also to VISTA Waylan Bryant for delivering these boxes to all five centers. Way to go!

West Side Drop in Center Creates New Library

West Side Drop in Center Creates New Library

Step by Step donated 650 books to the West Side Drop in Center on Bigley Ave to help start up a new library for residents who use the center.

This donation makes the new total number of books redistributed approximately 3650 books since January 09.

Great News! Book donations have continued to come in after the book drive's completion. 2 people donated from the UUC Congregation to Nell's office. One neighbor donated books and one person from freecycle donated a large quantity of quality books. Books were also donated during the clean up on the East End.

As such, the following counties now have filled Wish lists:

back with you...I was in VA visiting my daughter that was in the hospital

Book Fair Report

Thank you to everyone who assisted with Operation Read West Virginia's annual
state Wide book Drive. Thank you for those who helped staff the tables and package
the boxes. Thank you for those who provided moral support and information about how
to organize and run the event. Thank you to everyone who purchased books, donated monies,
and donated books to the operation. A very special thank you to all of those people who delivered
books to the wish list recipients in their home counties.

We collected and distributed just under 2000 books this week.
Books were delivered to preschool classrooms and daycares in 24 counties
out of the 32 counties requesting books.

Exact totals and locations will be revealed here this week! If you still have children's books to donate please contact me! nfleming@stepbystepwv.org

Wish lists not yet filled will still be filled as donations come in throughout
the year.

A Special Thank you to the Preston County Mobile Library for doing their
purchasing with us totalling 640 dollars worth of books purchased.

Hello West Virginia! I'm Nell Fleming a volunteer with Step by Step a non-for profit agency serving four counties in WV. I work as a Librarian through Americorps VISTA and will be this year's state wide book drive facilitator. As part of Operation Read West Virginia I welcome you to our new blog.
