Great News! Book donations have continued to come in after the book drive's completion. 2 people donated from the UUC Congregation to Nell's office. One neighbor donated books and one person from freecycle donated a large quantity of quality books. Books were also donated during the clean up on the East End.

As a child Aesop and Anansi fables helped framed my social consciousness. Roman and Greek mythology read assiduously in my teen years provided metaphors for my life. Passages in the book of Isaiah stirred my passion for grand poetic prose. Then I encountered "My mother, My self". Until then, my dad was the primary attachment of my childhood. but as Nancy Friday echoed my thoughts and gave voice to my feelings, I was able to use the colors of her story to paint a new, more vibrantly colorful and complex picture of my own mother. I saw her differently and was enriched and made whole by it. Today, I willingly acknowledge her strengths and foibles as part of my identikit.When I read the "The Women's Room", my compassion for women and pride in their survival strategies grew more intense. There have been other books that helped over rough times. Other books that made my heart sing or made me very grateful that life has been so good to me. I am grateful that I read before I went to school so books have always filled my world and life. They mark my transitions through life stages and to distant places. With them, one can always find an oases and inner harmony.

My favorite book as a child was The Four Story Mistake by Elizabeth Enright. I found it in a box in my attic. It had been given to my eldest sister (14 years older than me) by an aunt. This introduced me to The Melendy Family (previous book The Saturdays, additional sequels And Then There Were Five, and A Spiderweb for Two)four kids whose creativity was boundless,who took in a child from a troubled home, and wove mysteries for their youngest systems when they grew up and moved on. My most compelling early memory is my Mom reading all of Winnie the Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner to me while I was in an oxygen tent in the hospital when I was five. I had an allergic reaction to penecillian and went into shock and they had to give me a tracheotomy and I couldn't talk or sit up for days. Mom wove the 100 acre wood around me (and slept in a chair the entire week) so I wasn't alone and Pooh, Eeyore and Piglet have been my posse ever since. (I have a picture series of Pooh over our dining table at home).

I think the first "novel" that I read was in second grade, and it was either "Leprechauns Don't Play Basketball" or "Santa Claus Doesn't Mop Floors." And the premise of these was that either a gym teacher or a janitor was suspected of being a leprechaun or santa claus. And that's about all I remember, but I do remember being very proud that I finished a real book. It was paper back, and small, one of those half photo/half illustration covers, and had the most pages that I had ever read.

I remember reading the Boxcar children series especially the one where they were on the beach. I used to just sit and imagine I was like them.

I really like Bert's Hall of Great Inventions because Bert is really jealous of Ernie and I also love Grover in the Monster at the end of this book and the funniest part of it is at the end when he says "I'm so embarrassed".

I don't remember having any books as a child or having anyone read to me. Now I like to read self help books and anything with psycho killer stuff. The last book I read was The Shack. I like Stephen King and Dan Brown and The Chronicles of Narnia. Last summer I read to my children every night. My daughter Mattie is reading the Junie B. Jones chapter books. I like books about true things like A Child Called It. I think reading is important for children.

Wow!... the first book that comes to mind when i think of my favorite early childhood story is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. This book was so entertaining to me, for the simple fact that i could relate. I didn't want to eat eggs and ham together but the fact that it was green made it that much easier to say no to. I loved the way the book rhymed and the different ways he tried to eat it, how funny!! this guy was. Some years later i stayed the night over my cousin's and the next morning my aunt made scrambled eggs with cheese, they were soooooo good it just so happend that the secret ingredient was chopped ham, so i eventually ate it too.

My two favorite books from childhood were Sherlock Holmes and King Aurther The Once and Future King. My sister and I used to play Sherlock Holmes and Watson mysteries at home. We moved about fourteen or fifteen times and the book was eventually lost but I can remember that it had a red cover with a profile of Holmes on the cover. My most treasured reading memory however was memories of my dad reading to me from the Count of Monte Cristo

Whose Mouse are you was given to me by my Aunt Debby when I was seven years old. (1977) and has remained a favorite to this day. I enjoyed seeing this book become a favorite of my daughters as well

My favorite book as a kid was the Barbar the Elephant series. Especially the story where they all lived in tree houses with fanciful rope ladders. It looked so much more fun to me than regular houses. My second favorite book that stuck with me was a book called The Golaba Tree. It was published by the Cooperative League and showed how only by sharing their boxes can these two guys climb to the wonderful "golaba" fruit. A simple and corny ethic but it made sense to me as a kid who tended to take things literally.
